Stratfield Saye House The old house was built by Sir William Pitt, it is said about 1630, but probably 10 or 15 yearslater. tThe house was of brick, two storeyed, long and low . The entrance on the west side had nine bays and two-bay wings projecting by two bays. The facade
had as its principal motif two orders of broad pilasters and in the wings raised brick window surrounds of alternating block sizes. The quoins were treated in the same way. The wings end in a big Dutch gable. The heavy Tuscan porch is of 1838, when Benjamin Wyatt worked at Stratfield Saye. Above the
porch on the upper floor are thin Ionic columns and a pediment. These are of the date of the facade. The pretty cupola is of 1964, by the present Duke of
Wellington. The front of the house has in addition two further, outer, wings, and these are of the C18 below, of 1847 above.
