Stratfield Saye House The old house was built by Sir William Pitt, it is said
about 1630, but probably 10 or 15 yearslater. tThe house was of
brick, two storeyed, long and low . The entrance on the west side
had nine bays and two-bay wings projecting by two bays. The
facade
had as its principal motif two orders of broad pilasters and in
the wings raised brick window surrounds of alternating block
sizes. The quoins were treated in the same way. The wings end in
a big Dutch gable. The heavy Tuscan porch is of 1838, when
Benjamin Wyatt worked at Stratfield Saye. Above the
porch on the upper floor are thin Ionic columns and a pediment.
These are of the date of the facade. The pretty cupola is of 1964,
by the present Duke of
Wellington. The front of the house has in addition two further,
outer, wings, and these are of the C18 below, of 1847 above.
